philippe cohen solal (of gotan project) celebrates the 50th anniversary of summer of love, covering one of its anthems “aquarius / let the sunshine in” of hair the musical which premiered on stage in october 1967. a complex but soothing modern reggae moombathon riddim carried by the ethereal harmonies of legendary jamaican reggae singer horace andy (massive attack, skylarking, ain’t no sunshine...) with a delivering coda sung by an empowering choir.
¡ya basta! records asked two legends of the underground scene, somewhat connected to the spirituality of the song, to remix this take. first with an afro house / deep-house take of the master of the genre @boddhi-satva, and jack of all trades, mashup virtuoso @jstar-1 (remixer of major lazer / dj vadim...) for a retro catchy drum n bass/uk bass remix. finally lazy flow and face-t deliver a dancehall filler of a remix.

never released before on lp, here comes the complete original soundtracks of french cult film composer françois de roubaix for director yves boisset. two movies that embody the two sides of francois de roubaix’s approach to recording. for le saut de l’ange (1971), the self-taught composer wrote an orchestration for some fifty musicians playing strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion with two distinct solo instruments alternating the main theme: indian sitar on the one hand and accordion on the other. r.a.s (1973) was recorded on a 8-track tape recorder, in françois de roubaix’s home studio rue de courcelle, where most of his 70’s scores were recorded. the result is a mix of military-march rhythms, rolls on the snare-drum with sounds of synthi aks syntheziser: de roubaix invented a modern sound for this contemporary-history tragedy.

from his debut on tresor in 2012 with the super strength ep, all the way through to his vibrations long player in 2016, paris based artist marcelus has continuously provided some of the most intricate productions to come out on tresor records in recent years. marcelus instills unpredictable rhythms as the very eseence of his music. these di erent layered time signatures move together in spiraling forms designed in the french enchanter’s mind. the magnet ep o ers one long trip in four chapters. the title track, “magnet”, ushers in the ritual and strikes with its creole flavors, drawing careful listeners back to sound palettes and rhythms of some decisive ur references. from there on, the mind-bending begins. “parenthesis” is the second slow step in this brooding ceremony. “say it again” picks up the pace, driving the listener further down into the tunnel. the beads of “descent” finally brings the mind back to the surface of reality.

label boss yse is back on pft with the long anticpated follow up to his gesamtkunstwerk ep which made it into kai alci s best of 2015 chart. if you have been following ant plate s productions under his various guises (yse, yse saint laur ant, rhythm plate, vengaboys) you know what to expect - deep, quirky, innovative house music that sounds like nothing else out there. this ep doesn t disappoint - the grooves on here are impeccable from start to finish. opener unstoppable builds the tension nicely with nagging strings and chords before letting loose with the drums. sun shadow was actually selected by red rack em as one of his best of 2017 despite not even being released. now that s literally being ahead of your time. the robot boogie of all we are is guaranteed to stop heads on the dancefloor with it s unique vocal and syncopated shuffle. closing track you told me slows the tempo slightly and is one for the deeper moments.

more from the vaults of uprising with some previously unreleased dubplate mixes. the vocal cut is an alternate take with slightly different lyrics over a more raw, spare cut of the rhythm, sans synthesizer, which has been rarely, if ever heard. the dub mix on the flip was played on dubplate by jahlovemuzik back in the mid 70s. when one mix of a great tune is not enough, dkr is there.

martyn releases new album voids, his first for ostgut ton over the past year, dutch-born, washington d.c.-based producer martyn has undergone a metamorphosis – one that began with a medical emergency and has dovetailed into personal musical transformation. having narrowly avoided death after suffering a heart attack, martyn reentered his studio and began a process of reassessing the elements that drive him to make music: sampling, unpredictability, melancholy, sci-fi, polyrhythms, texture, ecstatic moments, detroit, interlocking percussion and bass. however, the initial spark to start producing again came through his experience listening to max roach’s 1979 ensemble percussion album m’boom.
following up their highly acclaimed debut collaboration ‘last day on earth’ (l.d.o.e.), the trio from berlin took it literally and decided to leave this planet’s orbit behind. an introductory epilogue a1.‘prologue (don’t panic)’ sets the tone for the journey to come.harmoniously but pulsing the traveler leaves the earths gravitational force to reach the title track a2. ‘moon’ . an emotional touching and growing deep house art piece. b. ‘point of no return’ at last leaves the bounding limitations of contemporary club music behind by exploring a completely distinct soundscape, even referencing a certain 80s pop vibe. one thing is for sure: the voyage is just beginning. godspeed! moon made on earth by humans
